North Korea fires ballistic missile over Japan link

A photo released by North Korean state media in 2017 purportedly showing Kim Jong-un watching a Hwasong-12 missile launch.

North Korea has test-fired a flurry of missiles in recent weeks, culminating Tuesday with the launch of an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan into the Pacific Ocean. The test missile, which traveled farther than any previous rocket launched by the country, was the latest demonstration of the North’s growing and increasingly sophisticated military arsenal.

The escalation comes as its leader, Kim Jong-un, has sought to solidify the country’s stance as a nuclear-armed power and his position at its helm. Last month, North Korea adopted a new law saying it would launch a nuclear strike “automatically and immediately” if the command and control system for its nuclear forces — an apparent reference to Mr. Kim’s leadership — was put in danger.*

Brick wall Verso dove???

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/oct/08/crimea-kerch-bridge-explosions-russia-ukraine

Peter Beaumont in Kyiv - Sat 8 Oct 2022 07.28 BST

The Kerch bridge from Russia to Crimea, a hated symbol of the Kremlin’s occupation of the southern Ukrainian peninsular and one of Vladimir Putin’s prestige projects, has been hit by a massive explosion.

Images from the bridge showed a fiercely burning fire engulfing at least two railway carriages from a train on the bridge, accompanied by a vast column of black smoke, and one half of the parallel road bridge collapsed into the Kerch Strait.

The explosion, which witnesses said could be heard kilometres away, took place before 6am on Saturday while a train was crossing the bridge.

It was not immediately clear what caused it, however Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the Ukrainian presidency, appeared to suggest Kyiv’s responsibility, tweeting: “Crimea, the bridge, the beginning. Everything illegal must be destroyed, everything stolen must be returned to Ukraine, everything belonging to the Russian occupation must be expelled.”

But analysts said the military gestures and combative words emanating from Washington, Seoul and Tokyo belied the reality that they have run out of ideas and options for containing North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme.

Experts argued that the US and its allies should focus on agreeing with Pyongyang steps to reduce the risk of a conflict on the Korean peninsula, even if doing so amounted to a tacit acceptance that North Korea would continue to possess nuclear weapons.

“Insistence on denuclearisation is not just a failure, it has turned into a farce,” said Ankit Panda, a nuclear weapons expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington.

“They test, we respond, we move on with our lives,” Panda added. “North Korea has already won. It’s a bitter pill, but at some point we’re going to have to swallow it.”

(ANSA) - ROME, OCT 10

- President Sergio Mattarella again condemned the war Russia has waged on its neighbour Ukraine on Monday, blasting it as "deplorable".

"A deplorable war, which the Russian Federation waged after unacceptably claiming the right to aggression, every day leaves a trail of death, destruction and hatred that pollutes every field of civil activity and relations," Mattarella said during a meeting with recipients of the 'knight of labour' honour.

"Peace is urgent and necessary. The path to build it stems from a re-establishment of the truth, of international law, of the freedom of the Ukrainian people".

The head of State said that Europe was "a target of this war".
"The principles of civilization, the values affirmed as the response of the (European) peoples to the barbarism of the Second World War and the dictatorships that provoked it, have been challenged," he said. "This is part of the reason why Europe is duty-bond to give a united, coherent response".

Mattarella also called for a response at the EU-level to the energy-price crisis triggered by the war.
"The reasoning of the energy market seem to create obstacles, but the responsibility of the institutions is precisely that of removing them," he said.
"Only the European Union has the strength to do this, intervening in the price mechanisms, in the out-of-proportion increases, in the unacceptable speculation that harms citizens".

"The first episode has been played. There will be others," Mr Medvedev, now deputy head of the Security Council, said on social media. Ukraine "will always pose a lasting, direct and immediate threat to Russia," said Medvedev.

"That's why along with protecting our people and securing our country's border, our future actions, in my opinion, should aim to fully dismantle the Ukrainian political regime."

President Joe Biden spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday after a deluge of Russian missiles targeted cities across Ukraine, condemning the strikes and pledging continued US security assistance “including advanced air defense systems.”

The White House did not specify which air defense systems Biden discussed with Zelensky, but the United States previously committed to providing Ukraine with National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems. NASAMS* would be capable of engaging Russian cruise missiles.

Importante Applause

Leaders of the G7 group of rich nations have said they will back Ukraine for "as long as it takes" in the wake of Monday's major Russian missile strikes.

The group, which met for emergency virtual talks, said it would keep on giving military and humanitarian aid.

Nato also said it would stand with Ukraine for as long as necessary.

"We will continue to provide financial, humanitarian, military, diplomatic and legal support and will stand firmly with Ukraine for as long as it takes," the group said in a statement.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian forces showered Ukraine with more missiles and munition-carrying drones Tuesday after widespread strikes killed at least 19 people in an attack the U.N. human rights office described as “particularly shocking” and amounting to potential war crimes.

My2cents

Russian forces attempting new front line after Kherson retreat, says UK MoD

After retreating around 20km in the north of the Kherson sector in early October, Russian forces are likely attempting to consolidate a new front line west from the village of Mylove, according to British intelligence.

Heavy fighting continues along this line, especially at the western end where Ukrainian advances mean Russia’s flank is no longer protected by the Inhulets River, the latest UK Ministry of Defence report reads.

“In recent days, the Russian occupation authorities have likely ordered preparation for the evacuation of some civilians from Kherson,” the report adds. “It is likely that they anticipate combat extending to the city of Kherson itself.”

Ok, anche Scholz ci è arrivato! Applause
